BLOG TOUR: Paper Planes Back Home by Tara Frejas

This is majorly exciting! My stop for the 'Paper Planes Back Home' blog tour is finally here, YAY! A big thank you to Bookish Diaries for this opportunity and a lovely book! That cover is just so cool, I want a physical copy like NOW!

When Gianna wakes up on a cloud, she is disoriented yet fascinated. She thinks she's only dreaming until she gets a storm of paper planes—"They're thoughts of people who remember," a man on another cloud tells her—each pleading for her not to leave. The man tells her these planes are the key to get out of there, and while she thinks it's hard to believe, she decides everything is worth trying if it meant finding her way back home.

Today, I have the pleasure of providing you with a review of this book. With such an unusual, beautiful story, you don't want to miss out on this heartfelt interpretation of limbo or the 'in-between'.

REVIEW TIME

Here was my initial review on goodreads:

And here is a more in depth review of the book...

Characters:
Let's start off with Skylar. He is a soldier in a coma on a cloud. Okay so he's not summed up in one sentence but basically I feel so sorry for him for the majority of this book. He is Gianna's guiding light and what helps her to pull through. I literally love his story and background.

With that said, Gianna is a valued character who makes it to the brink and back AND gets Skylar back too! Superwoman in disguise I tell you! I also really appreciate the diversity of her as a character. She is originally Asian and moved to New York so she could be who she wanted to be rather than someone her parents controlled. We very rarely read about this culture and I think more books should be more diverse!

Anna, aka Nurse Kerstein, is a nurse working in the hospital that both Skylar and Gianna are situated. It's brilliant to get a nurses point of view of the situation and to get both patients stories from one person. It clarifies the confusion I mentioned a little later in the review.

As for Aaron, he is kind of in Limbo himself which you'll understand what I mean when you read the book. He's in love with Gianna on one hand but on the other hand he has to deal with Ricky and Gianna's parents! Ouch, it's tough when she isn't awake to fight her corner.

Ricky is an arsehole. Enough said.

Jeannie is a bitch. Enough said.

Plot:
At first, I found the writing style and different narratives highly confusing because we read from 4 different characters point of views! It doesn't take long for you to get a hold of who's who however when we eventually get used to the writing style, we get flung into a World where Limbo is in the clouds. That line between life and death is in the clouds surrounded by paper plane thoughts. This representation is so unique and beautiful that I really hope this book is a true representation of what actually happens to us during a coma or life and death situation. We also hear about the ups and downs of people in comas and I think this book does justice to this life threatening condition.
Overall, this is a beautiful and unique story about love, loss and the in between. I would definitely recommend this read.

Overall feelings:

My overall feelings after reading this book are...

"IMAGINATIVE AND HEARTFELT"
